Quest for a Million Pennies
A Challenge is Here Set Forth to the National Citizen Police Academy Association Members
to Collect One Million Pennies by the 2003 National Convention in Tunica, Mississippi
Your child has cancer – these words signal the beginning of a parent’s worst nightmare. But for 40 years, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been giving children and their families hope and now the members of the National Citizen Police Academy Association can take part in offering hope to these children.
Children are accepted for treatment at St. Jude based on the following medical criteria: the patient must be referred by his or her physician and be suffering from a disease currently under study; the age limit of new patients is ordinarily 18 years of age, and normally patients cannot have received prior extensive treatment.
St. Jude treats children regardless of their ability to pay and covers all of a patient’s treatment costs beyond those reimbursed by third-party insurance and all costs for patients who have no insurance. The hospital also covers the transportation cost, housing, and meals for the patient and one parent.
St. Jude is truly a hospital without walls. Since the doors opened in 1962 over 18,000 patients have been treated from all 50 US states and 60 foreign countries. Current basic and clinical research at St. Jude includes work in chemotherapy, the biochemistry of normal cells, radiation therapy, genetic diseases, resistance to therapy, blood diseases, viruses, influenza, bone marrow transplantation and cell and gene therapy. Because the treatment protocols developed at St. Jude are freely shared with the medical community everywhere, one child saved at St. Jude represents thousands of children saved around the world.
